My Experience with the Right Now Mentality

Five years ago I was fat. I was so fat, I couldn’t see my own penis over my gut…yes it was that bad. But hey, I didn’t care! My girlfriend loved me and I love yodels and chocolate chips so all was good. She even bought me yodels (maybe she was trying to keep me fat, or she thought I was Santa - I don’t know) so I continued my quest to be a hippo. We went to Aruba and, upon returning, I saw myself in pictures with my beautiful girlfriend. OMG! It just didn’t dawn on me until that moment how much I had let myself go.

That night, I looked for a solution. It wasn’t a matter of if I was going to lose weight; it was a matter of how I was going to do it and what the most effective (not the easiest) way to lose weight would be. In fact, I was so committed, angry, you name it, I wanted to take it a step further – I wanted to be ripped!

I bought P90X and I crushed it. I cried, I screamed, but I did it and I found my penis again! After 90 days, I repeated it with P90x+, and then Insanity. Today I am still doing the workouts.

My point is this: It’s very simple. If you want change, if you want to break your routine and train yourself you need four things:

Massive Action

It must happen now, not tomorrow and not after the New Year

Repetition - just like a dog, you must repeat it over and over until a new habit forms

Praise yourself during the process

Notice I didn’t mention a shrink, Doctor Phil or a witch doctor with her sharp pins and doll who looks like you.

You Are NOT Above the Process

Those four steps aren’t just good ideas, they are requirements. Unless you get motivated to act now, it’s very likely that you will never act. You might mean well. You might say you’ll get started as soon as this or that happens. But until you act you’re just part of that 92% number I mentioned earlier.

Remember - massive action, right now, followed by repetition and praise. It’s funny, but praise can often be the part we forget, and yet it’s essential to the process! Just like the pup we mentioned earlier, you need to give yourself a pat on the back and a treat (or some new shoes!) to ensure you keep following through. For instance, when I completed my first 30 days of P90X, I treated myself to an hour massage at a salon downtown.

You don’t need huge rewards to make change happen. The motivation of seeing results is enough! I lost 5 pounds and I could see my penis again. That was reward enough for me!
